This Clefairy was distributed via serial code to players of all Generation VIII games at the Pokémon Centers in Japan from September 3 to 11, 2022 in commemoration of the Otsukimi festival in Japan. A pamphlet with three serial codes could be obtained during the distribution period, but in order to obtain it, the recipient must imitate the move Metronome. The codes are single-use; one of the codes on the pamphlet is valid for Sword and Shield, the second is for Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, and the last is for Legends: Arceus. The codes expired on September 30, 2022.

A bug involving Clefairy's nickname occurs if the serial code is redeemed on a Korean language game. Clefairy's origin language will be set to Japanese, but it is set to have no nickname, causing the game to assign it Clefairy's species name in Korean. Since its origin language and nickname don't match typesets, Clefairy's nickname will display as "??" when redeemed in this language.

Due to a printing issue, the code cards only had the randomised 12 digit serial code and omitted the 4 character prefix. For the first Sword and Shield code the prefix J256 should be used before inputting the remaining 12 character code. The Second Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl code has the prefix J257. The third Legends: Arceus code's prefix is J258.

All of these serial codes can be redeemed multiple times on the same save file, provided the player has multiple codes.

A bug involving Clefairy's nickname occurs if the serial code is redeemed on a Korean language game. Clefairy's origin language is set to English, but it is set to have no nickname, causing the game to assign it Clefairy's species name in Korean. Since its origin language and nickname don't match typesets, Clefairy's nickname will display as "??" when redeemed in this language.

A bug involving Growlithe's nickname occurs if the serial code is redeemed on a Korean, Traditional Chinese, or Simplified Chinese language game. Growlithe's origin language will be set to English, but it is set to have no nickname, causing the game to assign it Growlithe's species name in Korean/Traditional Chinese/Simplified Chinese. Since its origin language and nickname don't match typesets (English-language Pokémon cannot have Korean/Chinese nicknames), Growlithe's nickname will display as "??" when redeemed in Korean, and "???" when redeemed in Simplified or Traditional Chinese.

Spore viability was measured using the Most Probable Number (MPN) enumeration technique that has been described elsewhere (Mancinelli and Klovstad, 2000; Smith et al., 2011). In brief, spores were dislodged from coupons by vortexing in sterile deionized water and sand for 2 min, and then processed through 6 consecutive serial dilutions. Using 96-well plates, 20 μl from each serial dilution, and 180 μl of sterile media (Per 1 L: 16 g Difco nutrient broth, 5 g KCl, 0.22 g CaCl2, 1.6 g FeCl3, 3.4 mg MnSO4, 12 mg MgSO4, 1 g D-glucose) were loaded into 16 wells per dilution and scored (presence or absence of bacterial growth, assessed by turbidity) after incubation for 36 h at 30C.
